Today, April 27th is International Design Day. Design is a creative process that involves problem-solving, innovation, and aesthetics. It plays a crucial role in shaping our physical environment, products, systems, and services.

The design community and design organisations celebrate this annual day to highlight the importance of design in our everyday lives and increase awareness of design. With design playing a big part in our company, we didn’t want to miss out on celebrating today!

What is International Design Day?

The first design day was known as World Graphics Day, first held on April 27, 1995. Kim Paulsen, the Vice President of the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (ico-D), created the concept for this day, celebrating the positive impact of design and promoting awareness of its value.

Good design can improve functionality, efficiency, and usability. It can also evoke emotions, create memorable experiences, and drive engagement. That’s why design is powerful and influences our everyday lives and decisions. For instance, a website’s design can influence consumer purchasing decisions. If you select a website for browsing, the design of its layout and how easy it is to navigate plays a significant role in your decision-making process, whether you’re consciously aware of it or not.

Design can also bring about positive social change. It’s a visual communication tool that can raise awareness of important issues and spark conversations. It can address complex issues like sustainability, accessibility, and inclusivity. Furthermore, most people associate the colour green with sustainability, and that’s all due to the colours used in the design that bring out that association.

On International Design Day, we thought it would be a good idea to highlight our great design team here at Lightflows and find out what their favourite part of being a designer is.

Meet our designers

Here at Lightflows, we have two individual designers. Nik is our lead designer, who has been with the company for over ten years, and Joe is our digital designer, who has been with the company for a year and a half. Nik and Joe’s collaborative efforts on the Lightflows project have led to unique designs that have impressed clients and colleagues. I spoke with the design team to find out what their favourite part of being a designer is and what their favourite design they’ve worked on is.

What’s your favourite part of being a designer?

“It sounds simple, but being able to create something really cool or useful for someone or myself for fun. It’s a hobby and a job rolled into one.”

Favourite design project

“HomeViews was my favourite as I got to work on it from MVP to making a full design system, then expanding the brand into HomeViews Streets and evolving the site.”

What’s your favourite part of being a designer?

“I like that I have the ability to turn clients’ ideas into clear, functional, high-quality designs. Whether it be designing a website, a magazine, or signage for an exhibition, I am able to turn a basic idea from a client into a meaningful design which they are proud to have.”

Favourite design project

“A lot of the self-learn stuff was my favourite, as I had to learn a lot about character animation and illustration, which was new to me. It came out looking really nice. It was a huge project, and it all came together nicely.”

“The other project I quite like working on is IMPACT. It’s a nice evolution from the Elements brand, and some really nice designs have been done for it. The style we developed is strong and vibrant, and we’ve worked on many assets that have strengthened the brand.”

Summary

Overall, the role of designers is crucial for bringing ideas to life, and we’d like to take this opportunity to thank our designers for all their brilliant designs. Design plays a crucial role in our daily lives, whether it’s a website’s aesthetics, a blog’s layout, or a product’s visual appeal. It is the work of designers that brings these elements to life and enhances our overall experience.
